Irkutsk is one of the few cities in Siberia that managed to preserve its historical character and its original design.

Its historic center was formed on the site of a wooden fortress, whose remains were dismantled in 1790.

Today, Irkutsk has about 700 architectural monuments made solely of wood.

The Church of the Savior It is the only building of the fortress that survived and together with the Cathedral of the Epiphany, form the oldest architectural complex of Irkutsk.

Another prominent set of the city is located in the Angara seafront, at the beginning of Karl Marx Street.

It is formed by the monument to the founder of Trans-Siberian Railroad Alexander III, the local History Museum with rounded corner towers made in Moorish style, and the Sibiryakov Palace, better known as the Casa Blanca, which served as the residence of the general governors in 1838 to 1917.

In the main streets of the city, Karl Marx and Lenin, which cross each other, you can find many monuments of stone architecture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The main pedestrian street is Uritsky Street.

Between 1930 and 1940, buildings in the style of Soviet constructivism appeared in the city.

The monumental art of the Soviet period is represented by the memorial complex Eternal flame, the monument to Vladimir Lenin, the monument to the fighters of the revolution among others.

Finally, the monuments that emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union, are the restored monument to Alexander III and the triumphal arch Moscow Gates.

Until now, many streets in the historic center retain their Soviet names.
