When we think Russia as a tourist destination, the first thing that comes to mind are two cities: Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The first, Moscow, does not need presentations. It is the most important city in the country, the capital, with places as interesting and busy as the Kremlin o the Red Square.
St. Petersburg is not far behind. It is the second most populous city in Russia, its historic center is World Heritage Site by UNESCO for more than 20 years.
Moscow, St. Petersburg ... A lot of history to tell.
Magadan, Magadán (Магада́н) it probably does not sound as much as the previous two, but it is another corner to discover the vast Russia.
It is situated at the eastern end of the country, a coastal city with a port in the Okhotsk Sea, so that fishing and related industry are very important for the city.
For many Magadán comes together with a sad past, since during the time of Yosif Stalin it became a passage zone for prisoners of the Gulag (General Direction of Fields of Work).
From 1996 a monument called The Mask of Sadness remember all the people who died in the prison camps. The statue, measuring 15 meters high, shows a large face with a tear falling from his left eye, representing the faces of those prisoners. The right eye simulates a latticed door or window, remembering its cells. The back of the statue is guarded by a girl who sobs on her knees.
One of the main points of interest that Magadan has is its precious Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, built in 1985, crowned by its golden domes, which contrast with the white color that dominates the entire façade.
With its more than 70 meters high this Cathedral has become one of the largest in Russia and of course the largest in the area of the eastern end, visible from anywhere in the city, so if you decide to visit Magadán, no You can lose sight of it.
Another thing you should not lose sight of is a good coat.
The climate of this warm city, what is said to be warm, is not. Think that only 6 months of the year are above 0º, being able to reach 38 negative degrees during the winter months.
If the cold has not been any problem to you until now, our route through Magadan continues towards the Nagaev Bay, where you can admire "The stone crown", natural monument formed by a series of rocks, set that resembles a crown.
From the bay, the figure of "Vremya", a huge mammoth made from metal pieces, it shows us on its back the marine horizon, frozen during the coldest months of the year and only suitable for bathing for the bravest.
Do you want to know more about the way of life and the history of the Magadán area?
Then do not hesitate to visit the Regional Museum of Local History of Magadan, sample of the autochthonous fauna, typical clothes of the ancestors, etcetera.
Magadán will not be the most tourist city in Russia, we know, but it is a place to discover in your next trip to Russia.
